Dan Harmon Explains Possible Origin of Mr. Poopy Butthole

Keeping track of a TV show’s canon is difficult when many of its most memorable moments have to do with alternate universes and timelines. At the heart of Rick and Morty is the disposable nature of reality — “nobody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everybody’s gonna die…come watch TV” — and so many fan theories have sprung up in an attempt to explain the many twists and turns of the Sanchez family’s adventures.

One of the more popular theories is that in the season 2 episode “Total Rickall,” the entire plot takes place in another reality, and not the base reality of C-137. Fans point the the appearance and realness of the character introduced in that episode “Mr. Poopy Butthole” (ooo wee). In a recent San Diego Comic-Con panel, a fan asked Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and writer Mike McMahan to confirm or deny the theory. Watch the video for their official response.

While Harmon and Roiland prefer to be agnostic about the theory, Harmon did offer a potential, not canonical, explanation for the origin of Mr. Poopy Butthole. The character is indeed real, as evidenced by his nearly fatal shooting by Beth, and could simply be an organism that accompanies the memory parasites. When they appear, he does. He may just be a “benevolent one,” as Roiland says.

But the creators aren’t saying this is necessarily what happened, or that’s who Mr. Poopy Butthole is for sure. I guess we’ll have to endure the last few days before season three drops for more information ooo wee.

What do you think? Did “Total Rickall” happen in C-137? Where is Mr. Poopy Butthole really from? Let us know in the comments below.
