Dan Auerbach’s The Arcs Write MAKING A MURDERER-Inspired Song

Netflix’s latest hit, Making a Murderer, has been one of the most binge-worthy and talked-about docuseries the streaming service has ever produced. It has affected audiences across the country, inspiring petitions for Change.org and WhiteHouse.org (the latter of which received a response from the White House yesterday), as well as a huge outpouring of support on social media for Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, the two subjects of the series.

Not everybody is showing their support via social media however. Dan Auerbach (frontman for The Black Keys) and his new project The Arcs, have taken their feelings about the series to the next level, and written a song about it entitled “Lake Superior.”

The track, like the show, is dark and addictive. According to a blurb on the song’s SoundCloud page, Auerbach and The Arcs had “a few sleepless nights” following their viewing of the series, and quickly gathered into the studio to write and record this song in two days.

While the track’s bluesy psychedelic guitars are mellow and rhythmic, the lyrics are downright haunting. “Your alibi will never do,” Auerbach sings, “when the whole town’s got it out for you.” Clearly a reference to Avery and his relationship to his hometown of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where he was convicted of two crimes he allegedly committed. The series seems to have also inspired sickly feelings about the American justice system as a whole, as Auerbach sings, “the poor get whipped and the fat get fatter and the rich get rich.”

All of the proceeds of the song will go to The Innocence Project, which is a “public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals.”
