Cosplay Friday #155 – Celebrate 29 Days of Black Cosplay

February may be nearly over, but it’s not too late to celebrate #29DaysOfBlackCosplay. Cosplayer Chaka Cumberbatch came up with the idea of highlighting black cosplayers during Black History Month back in 2015. In a post on Black Girl Nerds, she explains how encouraging it was for her as a beginning cosplayer “to see other black nerds in costume.” The idea of #29DaysOfBlackCosplay is to do the same and foster a sense of community and to inspire others. Cosplayers of all ages, genders, and sizes are using the hashtag to share their work on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr; the variety of characters they cosplay is huge.

I’ve searched far and wide on social media to gather a handful of the many examples popping up for #29DaysOfBlackCosplay for this week’s Cosplay Friday. One awesome example:

Hop to the gallery below to see more fantastic costumes. You’ll find Mad Moxxi from Borderlands, Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element, a super cool Darth Vader, and more.

Have costumes to share? Be sure to head to Twitter and Instagram, use the #29DaysOfBlackCosplay hashtag, and tag @nerdist!

I’d also like to see all your costumes—or pictures of costumes if you’re a cosplay photographer—to include in future editions of Cosplay Friday. You can leave links to photos in the comments, tag or mention me in your Instagram uploads, or send me pics on Twitter. If you’re not the photographer, please include credit for him or her.
