Comics Relief: The X-MEN Staying in the Proper Marvel Universe, Valiant Teases THE BOOK OF DEATH & More

It’s Wednesday, which means new comics and new Comics Relief! For your reading pleasure today, we’ve got news on Valiant Comics‘ sure-to-be-bloody event series The Book of Death, more info about DC’s Convergence, and the skinny on the creator of Supernatural‘s comics debut. But before that, let’s address some of those rumors that the X-Men are leaving Spidey and the Avengers behind for their own little universe…

Everyone Chill Out, The X-Men Are Staying In The Proper Marvel Universe

One of the big rumors swirling around Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars is that, coming out of the event, the world of the X-Men (and Fantastic Four) would “spin-off” into their own mini-universe, separate from the main Marvel universe. The reason being that the House of Ideas didn’t want their Marvel Cinematic Universe characters mingling with their Fox-controlled characters, which happens to be the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. But Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso put those rumors to bed recently, stating “No, we’re not segregating the X-Men into their own universe. The X-Men are an integral part of the Marvel Universe. They play a big role in Secret Wars, and those mutants that survive the event will be crucial building blocks for the Marvel Universe moving forward.”

So there you have it. Wait, did he say “those mutants that surivive?” Are we getting another “no more mutants” thing again?? Here we go again…. [CBR]

Comics Community Rallies Around Fellow Artist During A Time Of Crisis

Comics people can be the best people, and the proof is in how they all band together to help a fellow creator during a time of unimaginable personal loss. Recently, a group of comic book artists have come together to raise money for fellow artist Wilfredo Torres, unifying under the hashtag of #TorresBenefit. Torres, whose wife Monica passed away recently after a long fight with cancer, is the artist on the forthcoming Jupiter’s Circle series with writer Mark Millar at Image Comics.

In a statement to Newsarama, Torres said, “I never imagined it would snowball into what it has; I’m overwhelmed by the response and I have no idea what to say. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved and I know Monica would have thought it was amazing.” So far, over $5,000 has been raised from commissions and eBay auctions, with the money going directly to Torres. Comic artists such as Frank Quitely, Chris Samnee, Gabriel Hardman, Phil Hester, Tom Fowler and Jordie Bellaire have sold commissions with all proceeds going to #TorresBenefit. You can find more commission and original art for this cause by searching for the hashtag #TorresBenefit on Twitter and other social media. [Newsarama]

At ComiXology Last Month, It Was Definitely The Women of Marvel Who Flexed Their Muscles Most

ComiXology had a buy one, get one free sale on Marvel titles last month, where you could double down on any of the Marvel issues in their store. This week, ComiXology announced that, during the sale, seven out of the top ten comics sold were books with female heroes. Books that sold particularly well were Silk, Thor, and Ms. Marvel. As a matter of fact, the only non-female-led titles that weren’t in the top 10 were Star Wars books. So…tell us again how female-fronted comics just don’t sell? [Comics Alliance]
