Comics Relief: Marvel Reunites Classic SECRET WARS Creative Team, DC’s Power Couple Calls It Quits, and Yes, GRUMPY CAT Too

In today’s Comics Relief, we’ve got news on the break up of comics’ biggest power couple, more details on the new DC Bombshells series, as well as news on an internet meme’s plan to conquer comics. But first off, some news regarding Secret Wars. The original version, that is…

Marvel Celebrates the Original Secret Wars with Creative Team Reunion Signing Tour

The original Secret Wars was the first “event” comic that brought the entire Marvel Universe together, and pre-dated DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths by a year. Now with Secret Wars 2.0 on the shelves, Marvel is celebrating the classic comic by bringing the original creators out on a signing tour this summer.

According to Marvel’s press releases, “Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and John Beatty reunite for the first time in nearly 30 years to make a limited number of convention appearances together, as they celebrate the anniversary of the legendary Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars maxi-series. This will be a rare opportunity to meet, greet and get autographs from all three of the original creators of one of the most important publishing events in comic book history.”

Before the tour launches though, artists Mike Zeck and John Beatty will make a stop together for a special pre-tour celebration at HeroesCon in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Zeck will debut his variant cover for the current Secret Wars series, a take on his now classic cover for the original Secret Wars #8, but with new characters replacing the old ones. The Comics That Inspired Sin City  Collected Together in Complete Edition

Alack Sinner might not be a comic many American fans are familiar with, but without it, we might never have had Frank Miller’s seminal Sin City series. Now the series is being collected together, as IDW Publishing’ Euro Comics label will be publishing The Complete Alack Sinner by José Muñoz and Carlos Sampayo. The comic will get a definitive English language edition in 2016, when Dean Mullaney‘s specialized imprint “Euro Comics” collects the complete Alack Sinner in 2 volumes of 300-odd pages each. DC’s Power Couple Breaks Up After Just Three Years

After making news just a couple of years ago that Superman and Wonder Woman were forming comics’ ultimate “power couple”, based on the preview for the post Convergence issue of Superman/Wonder Woman, the duo’s relationship status gets a little complicated when Superman flat out tells Wonder Woman….well, I’ll let the panel below speak for itself.

Ouch. Of course, just because these two aren’t going to be a couple anymore doesn’t mean their story is going to end anytime soon. Superman/Wonder Woman isn’t canceled (yet) so I’m sure there is plenty of story left for DC to mine from the break up alone. [ComicBook.com]

AFTER Conquering the Internet, Grumpy Cat Sets Her Eyes of Disdain on Comics

One day we are going to look back on Grumpy Cat the way people look back at Pet Rocks, with a collective “we were all obsessed with that??” What started out as mildly amusing meme now has its (her) Lifetime TV movie. And now, a comic book from Dynamite Entertainment, too.

Currently scheduled for a fall 2015 release, the three-issue miniseries has the internet sensation that won’t go away take the spotlight “as Grumpy Cat goes on adventures with her brother, Pokey.” In addition to the print comics, Dynamite will launch a specially branded Grumpy Cat website, where it will release weekly comic strips. No creative team has been announced for either the miniseries or the webcomic, but I’m sure Grumpy Cat devotees will buy it no matter who is behind it. [Comic Book Resources]

Bruce Wayne Had a Much Happier Childhood in the DC Bombshells Universe

Recently DC Comics Announced that their massively successful series of variant covers from last year, the DC Bombshells, which featured the female DC characters in retro 1940s pin-up style as designed by artist Ant Lucia, would be getting their own comic book series. This new book would be set on a parallel Earth where the Bombshells fought in an alternate World War II.

At the recent DC All Access Panel at Denver Comic Con, writer Marguerite Bennett revealed that in the world of the DC Bombshells, Bruce Wayne’s parents were never killed, and instead they were saved by Batwoman. Bennett says that the “whole conceit of the story is that heroines came first, that there were no women who were derivative of their male counterparts.” Although covers for Wave 2  of the Bombshells variants show male heroes in that universe, it looks like in this world, the male heroes were inspired by the female ones. I’d say that’s pretty cool. [Bleeding Cool]

Valiant Announces Divinity II for 2016

Valiant Comics has announced a sequel to their series Divinity, simply titled Divinity II, which will be a new prestige format limited series continuing the critically acclaimed debut of Valiant’s first all-new, headlining character from writer Matt Kindt and artist Trevor Hairsine. Although the book doesn’t come out for some time, as it is currently set for release in April 2016, Divinity II will reunite Kindt and Hairsine with inker Ryan Winn, colorist David Baron, and cover artists Jelena Kevic-Djurdjevic and Tom Muller.

According to writer Matt Kindt, “Divinity is different than any character I’ve ever written before. I thought it would be fun to purposely create a character that is so overpowered – so amazing – that he’s practically a god. The fascinating thing is then creating a scenario and a challenge for him. What can stand against a character like that?” The collection of the first Divinity series will be available in stores July 15th. [Newsarama]

Top Shelf and IDW Announce Graphic Novel Adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Hardcore fans of Hunter S. Thompson are going to be in for a treat this year, as IDW and Top Shelf are teaming up to bring Hunter S. Thompson’s beloved cult novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas into graphic novel form by Eisner-nominated artist Troy Little (Angora Napkin.) For those not familiar with the book, or the 1997 film adaptation from Terry Gilliam,  Fear and Loathing, which is subtitled “A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream,” follows Thompson analogue Raoul Duke on “the mother of all Vegas benders, as he and his attorney Dr. Gonzo cover a motorcycle race, crash a drug-enforcement convention, and rack up obscenely large room-service bills, all while dosed to the gills on a truly spectacular assortment of mind-altering substances.”  Fear and Loathing is  scheduled for a October 2015 release, in full psychedelic color of course.
