Comics Relief: Grant Morrison Hints at WONDER WOMAN: EARTH ONE Vol.2

Welcome to your Wednesday edition of Comics Relief kids! Lots of news this week, on everything from Marvel’s latest heroic reinvention, to the return of Bone. But first, Grant Morrison drops hints about the upcoming second chapter of his OGN series Wonder Woman: Earth One. Read on for all the details!

Grant Morrison drops first hints about Wonder Woman: Earth One Volume 2

Recently, comics superstar Grant Morrison released his long-awaited take on the Amazing Amazon with his Wonder Woman: Earth One OGN from DC Comics. In an interview with Nerdist, he teased that two more volumes were coming, which he would write with his collaborator Yanick Paquette, but didn’t say much else about them.

Now, in a new interview with Publishers Weekly, Morrison has finally revealed more details, including that the second book would focus a lot on Queen Hippolyta, Diana’s mother. He says “Queen Hippolyta is my favorite character. I’m onto the second book, and she’s the one I’m more interested in.” Even more exciting? Over the course of the interview, Morrison discussed his progress on the sequel, saying that he hopes to “bring in the evolution of feminist comics critique and more about queer and trans issues.” All of this sounds like music to our ears. No release date is set for Wonder Woman: Earth One Vol.2, but considering how long it took to make the first one, this could take a while. [CBR]

Lion Forge To Launch Voltron: Legendary Defender Comic

The Transformers weren’t the only transforming robots who ruled the ’80s afternoon cartoon airwaves. And no, I’m not talking about the GoBots either. I’m talking about Voltron, Defender of the Universe, the giant robot made out of other giant robots–except these robots were all giant cats (look, the ’80s were weird, ok?)

Now Voltron is getting a new animated series via Netflix, and Dreamworks and Lion Forge have just announced a companion comic book called Voltron: Legendary Defender. The new comic will be a five-issue mini-series written by the Netflix show’s writers, Tim Hedrick and Mitch Iverson, and will centers around “stories too outlandish for Netflix.” The project debuts in July and has no artist attached as of yet, but Lion Forge has released a promotional image drawn by Khary Randolph, which you can see below. IDW Opens Up The Disney Vaults

Attention, all serious Disneyphiles! This week, publisher IDW went deep into the Disney vaults in order to release a series of Silly Symphonies comic strips, which they’ve collected into a new 192-page volume comic. This is the first time some of these Silly Symphony newspaper strips will be collected in English in some 80 years, so this is huge news for both Disney and IDW.

This is the first of four other volumes set for release, and will feature characters like Donald Duck and Bucky Bug—the first newspaper Disney character. Silly Symphonies, Vol. 1: The Complete Disney Classics releases Wednesday, April 27th. [Bleeding Cool]

Black Mask Reveals Plans for the Rest of 2016

Publisher Black Mask has been making quite a name for itself over the past year, with titles like We Can Never Go Home and several others. Now they are previewing the rest of their 2016 slate, with new titles like Jade Street Protection Services (from writer Katy Rex and artist Fabian Lelay), which will be Black Mask’s first all-ages book, described as “The Breakfast Club of Hogwarts.”

Also coming this year is Kim & Kim from writer Magdalene Visaggio and artist Eva Cabrera, described as “day-glo action adventure that’s bursting with energy and enthusiasm and puts queer women and trans women front and center.”

Also of interest to fans is their title No Angel, from artist Ari Syahrazad, and writers Eric Palicki (Guardians Of Infinity) and Adrianne Palicki, who plays Bobbie Morse a.k.a. Mockingbird in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. No Angel is described as “a cosmological and conspiratorial modern western in the style of Preacher meets Justified by way of Jodorowsky.” And it also happens to be Palicki’s comic book debut, so kudos to her! Jeff Smith Celebrates 25 Years of Bone

Rejoice, fans of Bone! Creator Jeff Smith has announced he will return to Bone—his most beloved character—just in time for an all-new story in celebration of the character’s 25th Anniversary. Bone: Coda will see Smith return to the character he wrote and illustrated for 55 issues between 1991 and 2004, starting this July.

The new series will commemorate the 25th anniversary with a “new (and completely superfluous!) adventure featuring the Bone cousins.” Bone: Coda will be written and drawn by Jeff Smith, and will focus on the cousins and Bartleby as they travel across a desert back to Boneville. Also on its way will be complete Bone companion written by Stephen Weiner. Bone: Coda arrives this July from Cartoon Books. [CBR]

Marvel Unveils Their Newest Quasar

Last week, Marvel teased out an image with a tease that, coming soon, we’d see the “long awaited return” of a long lost character. Turns out, said character is the all-new Quasar. Originally a man, the newest bearer of the power bands is S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Avril Kinkaid, a new character created by Nick Spencer and artist Angel Unzueta.

The new Quasar will be introduced in the Avengers: Standoff event that’s going on at Marvel right now, and gets her Quasar powers from the original bearer of the mantle, Wendell Vaughn. Writer Nick Spencer told Marvel.com that Kinkaid will have a big part to play—not only in the Avengers: Standoff story, but also in several upcoming Marvel stories. You can see the first image of the new Quasar below: [Comics Beat]

What is Marvel’s Mosaic?

Speaking of Marvel teasers (they do love their teasers lately, don’t they?) the publisher has teased out images for something they’re calling Mosaic. We don’t know what Mosaic is yet, but the images feature a series of puzzle pieces with the statement “Who is Mosaic?” which means it’s a character, and not just another crossover or event series (although it could be both I suppose) You can check out the first Mosaic teasers in our gallery below.
