Comics Relief: DC Celebrates 75 Years of Robin, The Boy Wonder

It’s Wednesday, which means not only new comics at your local comic book shop, but a new edition of Comics Relief as well. Today we’ve got news on a somewhat unique giveaway from Image Comics for its new series, the Merc with the Mouth getting his own “adult” coloring book, and lots more. But first off, this year marks seventy-five years of everyone’s favorite kid sidekick Robin, and DC has put together a little something to celebrate the character’s history. Read on for more details…

DC Celebrates 75 Years of Robin with Nifty Infographic

This year marks the 75th anniversary of Robin, The Boy Wonder. And although Bruce Wayne’s former ward Dick Grayson held the title of Robin for the first forty-four years of there even being a Robin, since then many others have taken up the mantle of Batman’s junior partner. Now DC has released an infographic revealing every Robin since the Detective Comics #38 from back in 1940, at least in the main DC universe, from Dick to the current stars of We Are…Robin (the only “alternate universe” Robin used is Carrie Kelly from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, but given that book’s importance in comic book history, it makes sense she’d be included.) Could Ongoing ‘Cold War’ Between DC and Black Lightning creator Tony Isabella Be over?

Black Lightning was DC’s first African-American superhero to headline his own comic back in 1977, but has only sporadically made appearances since then, due to the character’s creator, Tony Isabella, having a contentious relationship with DC over the past four decades. (allegedly, part of the reason for this stems from DC changing Black Lightning to lame knock-off character Black Vulcan for the old Super Friends cartoon show, as a way to not have to pay Isabella creator royalties.) But could it be that a reconciliation between Isabella and DC is happenening? On his blog, Isabella had this to say:

[DC CCO] Geoff [Johns] wanted to talk about Black Lightning and my dissatisfaction with my decades-unpleasant relationship with DC Comics. Just as I always have, Geoff sees a lot of potential in my finest creation. It’s a potential the previous DC management clearly never saw. We talked about what it would take to make things right between me and DC so that Geoff could, in good conscience, consider developing the character in this bigger-than-1976-or-even-1995 new comics world. That conversation will remain private for now. Let’s just call it a good start. It was the first time in two decades a DC executive didn’t speak to me like I was a child or insane.”

DC is reprinting all of Isabella’s Black Lightning comics from the seventies in a new trade paperback; hopefully this means we are on the way to a reconciliation between DC and Black Lightning’s creator. [Comics Alliance]

Marvel Set To Release New Jack Kirby Monster Variant Covers

Now that the estate of Jack Kirby has settled with Marvel, expect a lot more comics and other products from the company celebrating Kirby’s legacy within the company. After all, the man did co-create most of the company’s iconic characters, like Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, and so many more.

But before Kirby was creating heroes for Marvel, he was drawing giant monsters for Atlas, the company Marvel was known as before the dawn of their heroic age. Now this October, Marvel is honoring the great monsters of Kirby’s past with a series of Monster variant covers, covering the likes of Fing-Fang-Foom and more. You can check out some of their Kirby Monster variants, as well as what other titles will be part of the line-up, at the following link: [Bleeding Cool]

Image Comics To Give Away Condoms as promo items for New book The Beauty

We’ve seen interesting give-away items with comics over the years-stickers, paper masks, buttons, you name it. But now Image Comics is topping every other publisher by giving away condoms as promo for their latest book The Beauty, from Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley which comes out next month. Why a condom? Well, here’s the official description of the book, which will give you an idea:

Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day? What if it was a sexually transmitted disease? In the world of The Beauty, physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover it comes at a terrible price.

Also along with the comic, aside from condoms, are PSA brocheres about the Beauty STD. Most genius marketing ever? It gets my vote. [Bleeding Cool]

Silver Screen Heroes imagines superheroes as Golden Era Hollywood stars

These days, superheroes are the dominant form of blockbuster entertainment, but imagine if that had been the case back in what is considered the Golden Era of Hollywood, which is generally seen as the early 1930’s through the 1950’s. Comics artist Joe Phillips has created some wonderful artwork for this ‘What if” scenario, and made several illustrations featuring the biggest movies of the Golden Era as comic book superheroes for a new series of prints called Silver Screen Heroes. You can check them all out in our gallery below, and be sure to hit up Phillip’s Facebook page for more in this series as they become available. [Comics Alliance]
