Comic-Con Will Stay In San Diego Through 2018

If you love coming to San Diego for Comic-Con, then we have good news for you!

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has announced a new deal with the organizers of Comic-Con International that will keep Comic-Con in San Diego through 2018. The previous deal expires after this year’s convention.

At a press conference earlier today, Faulconer was flanked by Comic-Con organizers and San Diego Convention Center representatives as he touted the economic benefits for keeping the convention. “If you still don’t understand how much Comic-Con means to San Diego, more Superman means more super-streets, more light sabers means more library hours, and more Comic-Con means more neighborhood services for San Diegans.”

Despite Comic-Con’s reported $135 million influx to the city, it was not a guaranteed renewal. Both Los Angeles and Anaheim made major pushes to attract Comic-Con upstate after the long-promised San Diego Convention Center expansion failed to materialize. Comic-Con has become such a major attraction, it is no longer contained by the Convention Center alone — cough cough Nerdist Conival cough —  so there’s a very real possibility the same issue may materialize again in three years if nothing is done to address it.

To keep Comic-Con this time, San Diego reportedly convinced the local hotels “not to jack rates for the slew of visitors who invade the city each year.” A relative measure, considering the high prices of the hotels as they currently stand, but an appreciated one regardless. The San Diego Convention Center also offered a flat rate for Comic-Con itself.

Comic fans, are you happy to hear that Comic-Con is staying in San Diego? Would you want to see Comic-Con move to Los Angeles, Anaheim, or Las Vegas? Say “SHAZAM!” and share your comments below!
