Fatale #14 | Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

There’s just something about Lovecraft-tinged horror set against a World War II backdrop that acts as narrative crack to me. Fatale #14 takes us back in time to World War II-era Romania, as Josephine tries to make sense of her nightmares and the monsters she’s been seeing both in her sleeping and waking hours. We also meet Walt Booker, a handsome American soldier who is inextricably intertwined with Josephine and might have been the only man who could really wrangle the femme fatale. Action-packed, loaded with juicy backstory and Nazi demons, this is one issue that you won’t want to miss. With every 22-page installment, this series gets better and better. Avengers: The Enemy Within #1 | Kelly Sue Deconnick and Scott Hepburn

Yeah, Infinity‘s looming on the horizon and Age of Ultron  is still underway, but that’s not going to stop Marvel from launching a miniature crossover between Captain Marvel/Avengers Assemble. Centering around Captain Marvel and her rapidly deteriorating mental state, a brain condition which remains quite mysterious despite its evident adverse effects on Carol Danvers’ well being, Enemy Within finds echoes of the Avengers’ past poppin’ up all over Manhattan. Are they really happening? Is it all in Carol’s brain? Deconnick is taking us on an increasingly crazy journey into the heart of Captain Marvel’s psychodrama and Scott Hepburn’s manic artwork only serves to heighten the feeling of unease, both exterior and interior. Whatever’s really going on for Ms. Danvers, it doesn’t look good, but we’re awfully excited to see what’s next.

Dream Thief #1 | Jai Nitz and Greg Smallwood

Remember that show Awake where the guy led a dual life, one when he was sleeping and one when he was awake? Jai Nitz’s Dream Thief, a new series from Dark Horse, is kind of like that, except protagonist John Lincoln’s nighttime persona is an Aboriginal avatar of vengeance and he has to spend his waking hours wondering about corpse disposal and quite literally washing the blood from his hands. Well, what did you expect after stealing what’s clearly a cursed Aboriginal mask? To not be possessed by vengeful spirits from the afterlife? A dark, terse thriller, Dream Thief has a strong pedigree in writer Nitz, a Bram Stoker Award winner, and Greg Smallwood’s shadow-laden, noir-ish art makes the tale leap off the page. Throw in an Alex Ross cover and you’ve got yourself a must-read title for this week’s pull list.
