Comedy Playlist: James Corden’s Golden Ticket, Settlers of Brooklyn, & Acronym Fun

Spring is all about optimism, transitions, and new beginnings. As you ponder that thought, we have a gaggle of videos that usher in the season quite nicely. We start off with a proper origin story of how the freshly minted Late Late Show host James Corden came into his new talk show gig. We follow that up with a parody featuring some hipster settlers inhabiting the freshly discovered lands of Brooklyn. Lastly, we finish off the trifecta of mirth with a sampling of the comedy stylings of Cowboy Hotel. The sketch group makes word abbreviations a thing of beauty. OK, maybe that last one was a stretch. Clear your mind and let’s get to enjoying this season properly!

Who the heck is this James Corden fellow? Whovians know him best as Stormageddon’s father, but since many Americans are not quite familiar with new host of The Late Late Show, the writers thought it fitting to give the audience a proper introduction. It turns out the CBS execs put on their Willy Wonka hats and found their late night host the old fashioned way. Yep, Corden was appointed via a Golden Ticket. Many a celeb had to consume diet-breaking chocolate bars in the process, but only the one true host would discover the paper key. But what happened once the lucky winner made his golden discovery? Apparently only talk show royalty, veteran guests, an action hero, and a Oscar-winning actress could prepare him for the task.

From dream building we move into the world of land settling. We hope most of you are familiar with the multiplayer board game, Settlers of Catan. (This is Nerdist, after all.) In the game, players take on the roles of settlers who attempt to build and develop property. Playing with this concept, the folks at Above Average offer up a new game called Settlers of Brooklyn. In this world, hipsters are the inhabitants who must fully gentrify colonies. Coffee, vinyl, bicycles, and skinny jeans are their resources. Laugh your way to entitlement, kids!

Who doesn’t love a good, ole’ acronym? They make speaking speedier and can sometimes be clever as well. Cowboy Hotel’s Parcel Peoples Commercial demonstrates how those same acronyms can be a delivery guy’s worst nightmare. Thanks Peoples Improv Theatre! Another person’s suffering is so much funnier than our own.
