Cinefix Reveals Their Favorite Movie Plot Twists of All Time

We’re not even going to “spoiler alert” this one since clicking on a link with a headline like that and the first few moments of the video are warning enough.

The wonderful folks over at Cinefix – purveyors of all things cinematically interesting – have once again given us a video to obsess over. This time it’s in the greatest plot twists in cinema history. They’re not just going over what “Soylent Green” was or the significance of “Rosebud”, this deep-dive into all sorts of movies is broken down into the type of twist and we must say they cover the variety really well. Their categories and favorites for each are as follows:

  • Location/Time Trick – Planet of the Apes
  • All a Part of the Plan – The Sting
  • Unexpectedly Bad/Guilty – Murder on the Orient Express
  • Unexpectedly Good – Charade
  • It Was All a Dream – The Wizard of Oz
  • All In Their Head – Fight Club
  • Not Dead – The Third Man
  • Other/”Straight-up lies” – F for Fake
  • Mistaken Identity – Empire Strikes Back
  • X Is Actually Y! – Psycho

Some of them are pretty standard or might even seem a bit cliche. However it is important to remember that films like Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz, and Psycho are quite literally some of the first to ever blow audiences’ minds with their plot twists.

One of our favorites is their category for “Other” and their pick of Orson Welles‘ 1973 F for Fake. The documentary film begins with a promise from Welles stating “For the next hour, everything you hear from us is really true and based on solid fact.” This promise is indeed kept for that exact amount of time. What we don’t realize when watching is that the run-time of the film is 88 minutes meaning that anything outside that hour is complete fiction.
