The 8-Bit Cinema of PAN’S LABYRINTH is Still Beautiful and Just As Creepy

Cinefix’s 8-Bit Cinema are like visual Cliff’s Notes for movies. Condensed versions of their film counterparts with all the pertinent details and plot in an easily digestible few minutes. Not that you should rely on these for your entire cinematic experience because some of the ones they’ve covered have been classics that will change the way you think about film (I’m not looking at you Scarface).

Cinefix’s latest explores the world of Guillermo del Toro‘s Pan’s Labyrinth (or in its native Spanish: El Laberinto del Fauno) in a way that not only makes us want to re-watch the 2006 film but also wish there was actually an old school NES game of it.

It’s fun to look for all the little details Cinefix puts into these videos. What’s made to look simple requires a massive amount of work and it’s things like the “Presiona start” at the beginning or the fact they use old gaming sound effects for things like gunshots or traveling up and down stairs. There’s also something to be said about how Ofelia travels through the layers of the Labyrinth in 8-bit style. Not a smooth transition but rather in a way you’d expect from a game working off old hardware.

These really make us long for the days where there was an NES game for almost every movie. If there were a modern game made for the movie it would likely give people (just me) nightmares so the 8-bit Cinema quality is just about as realistic as it needs to be to play through the brutal action of a beautiful film like Pan’s Labyrinth.
