CHILD’S PLAY Remake Will Bring Chucky Back to the Big Screen

It’s been almost fifteen years since the killer doll known as Chucky terrorized moviegoers in theaters. And while Chucky’s two direct-to-video movies have been fun, he’s ready to make a big screen comeback in a reboot of his original movie, Child’s Play.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, MGM is making remake of Child’s Play, the 1988 film that introduced Brad Dourif‘s sinister serial killer, Charles Lee Ray. To escape his imminent death, Charles used a magic ritual to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll. A single mother named Karen Barclay inadvertently purchased the possessed “Chucky” doll for her son, Andy. Naturally, Chucky used his new body to go on a killing spree while attempting to make Andy his new host.

Kung Fury 2 screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith wrote the new Child’s Play reboot, which has Polaroid helmer Lars Klevberg attached to direct. It’s unclear how this will affect Chucky co-creator Don Mancini’s recently announced Child’s Play TV series. According to a report from Bloody Disgusting, Dourif will reprise his role as Chucky for the eight-hour TV show, which will follow up on the events of Cult of Chucky.

Can Chucky’s ongoing exist side-by-side with a reboot Chucky? It’s possible, but the new Child’s Play movie will probably redesign and re-conceive its murderous villain. Ideally, both projects will come to fruition so we can get a Chucky vs. Chucky movie.
