Mezco’s BRIDE OF CHUCKY Barbie Parody for April Fools Needs to Be Real

April Fool jokes online fall into a few different categories. There’s silly fake news that you’re annoyed isn’t real, clever gags that have a lot of thought put into them, and ads for products that will never happen for one reason or another. Sometimes said products are really stupid or bizarre, but other times, it breaks your heart that they won’t actually be available.

Such is the case with Mezco Toyz‘ lead image from their email newsletter this morning:

Based on “Make Me Pretty ” Barbie, an oversized doll head and torso that allowed kids to practice glamour makeovers on Mattel‘s signature princess of pink, this completely hypothetical toy would allow budding goths to style the significantly more evil Tiffany doll from Bride of Chucky and its subsequent sequels.

Here’s why it’s a disappointment that Mezco knew this would be received as an obvious prank: traditionally male-skewing toys get this kind of remake all the time. Both Mezco and Funko regularly make cute versions of action figures based on, say, Freddy Krueger and A Clockwork Orange‘s Alex de Large. Funko weren’t fooling when they announced a breakfast cereal the other day based on PG cartoon versions of horror characters, and Mattel once made a Baby Skeletor doll based on a Robot Chicken skit, but when it comes to Barbie and the like, it’s assumed that collectors just want mint-in-box high-end stuff, and not something that reproduces the play pattern of traditionally girl-skewing toys.

The popularity of shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and the more horror-themed Dragula suggests that there are plenty of grown-ups who love the idea of trying unconventional thematic makeovers. Frankly, we’d love to see what creative goth fans of all genders would do with a style-your-own Tiffany. And why even confine it to horror licenses? Imagine Rey from Star Wars, with fashion tools that could make her a fabulous Jedi OR a sizzling Sith. Maybe Marvel’s Nebula could come with wig options. And there’s no reason we’d have to confine it to female characters: Tiffany’s true love Chucky could use an image update, for one.

Would you want to style some of your favorite action figure characters this way? We’d love to hear it in comments.
