At the moment, there’s genuinely no stopping Donald Glover. He’s slaying the TV game with his hit FX series Atlanta, he got cast as Lando Calrissian in an upcoming Star Wars film, and now, he’s further established himself as one of the most dynamic figures in pop culture with his new Childish Gambino album, “Awaken, My Love!” As of today, the album is available for streaming on Apple Music and Spotify.
Satisfying our expectations, “Awaken, My Love!” is a departure from the ephemeral, uneven and uber-modern Because The Internet, eschewing such musical themes in favor of a psychedelic soul and funk influence. In fact, Gambino seems to have shed his label as a rapper entirely, or at least put it aside for this album. It’s all soulful singing Gambino here, and his soulful vocals combined with hazy R&B backing tracks position this album as perhaps the finest modern reinterpretation of groups like Funkadelic or Sly and the Family Stone.
That’s a sentiment echoed by The Roots drummer Questlove, who seemingly couldn’t contain himself when he heard the record, saying in a lengthy, breathless Instagram post that he woke D’Angelo up at 4 a.m. to listen to it:
I thought I was getting some fresh millennial 2016 hip hop shit and I got sucker punched. The last sucker punch in black music I remember in which NOONE had a clue what was coming was Sly’s #TheresARiotGoinOn […] I was NOT expecting a trip to Detroit circa 1972 at United Sound Studios. I haven’t written or been stunned by an album I wasn’t expecting since that time I got an advance of #BackToBlack. The music is so lush man, I can see the kaleidoscope color mesh of the #Westbound logo. Dude I can’t curb my enthusiasm.
Only time will tell how much staying power “Awaken, My Love!” truly has, but we tend to agree with Questlove, as this is a record we’ll spin again and again in the near (and presumably, distant) future. Listen to it below.
