Childish Gambino Rapping over the STRANGER THINGS Theme is Incredible

Childish Gambino Rapping over the STRANGER THINGS Theme is Incredible

As is obvious, Stranger Things is one of the biggest things in TV right now, as is Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) for his new FX series Atlanta, so somebody went ahead and combined the two in a marriage that’s far more perfect than we had any right to expect. Soundcloud user kmlkmljkl felt it right to mash-up the rap of Childish Gambino with the haunting synth theme song of Stranger Things, and the two elements work together supernaturally well.

Specifically, the producer took the vocal track from Gambino’s 2011 track “Bonfire” and laid it atop a remix (by c418) of the Stranger Things theme by Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon of the electronic band S U R V I V E, thus creating “Stranger Bonfire.” The remixed instrumental is very faithful to the original version, adding an extra oomph and some house elements, so it’s not too far removed from the original that you don’t recognize it as being from Stranger Things.

“Bonfire” has a menacing, synth-led sound to begin with, so this vocal track isn’t entirely out of place. The vibe is definitely different, though: While the music video for “Bonfire” captures its vibe perfectly—like you’re running through the dark woods, dirty and tattered and not sure why—the remix sounds more directly aggressive yet ethereally eerie.

In celebration of two of the finest entities in television right now, check out the remix above, which, for our money, is the greatest rap/TV theme song mash-up since Snoop Dogg and Thomas The Tank Engine.
