A CHARMED Reboot is Headed to the CW

A CHARMED Reboot is Headed to the CW

We seem to be in the era of the television revival and reboot, with shows like X-Files, Full House, Will & Grace, 24, and more making their return to the small screen. And now another nostalgic fave is going to be headed back to television: As Deadline reports, The CW is looking to bring back Charmed, a classic supernatural drama from the late 90s and early aughts. The network has ordered a script, and the reboot is in the works.

The CW’s new Charmed is going to be helmed by the team that has brought us the breakout CW hit, Jane the Virgin, with executive producers Jennie Snyder Urman and Ben Silverman and co-writers/co-executive producers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin. We don’t really know much about the new show’s story arc, but we do know that the series is going to be based on a story written by O’Toole, Rardin, and Urman.

So what else can we expect from the new Charmed? This early on, details are pretty sparse, from story to casting. However, since this is being labeled a reboot and not a revival, we can expect this show will likely not take place after the events from season 8 of Charmed. After all, the series definitely wrapped up the story of the Halliwell sisters, with the women—spoilers!—writing their story in the Book of Shadows and the show ending with an elderly Piper reading her and her sisters’ story to her grandkids. So while we can hope for some fun cameos from the likes of Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan, and Holly Marie Combs, their presence will likely be similar to the presence of Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver in the Ghostbuster reboot.

This show could signal a fun expansion of the CW’s supernatural programming. Will the new Halliwell sisters (or whatever their equivalent will be on the new show) live in a world where Piper, Phoebe, and Paige are known entities, or are they rewriting the story entirely? Could they be doing something crazy and setting the new Charmed in the same universe as The Vampire Diaries or Supernatural? We’ll have to wait and find out, but with the brains behind Jane the Virgin at the wheel, this updated Charmed has the makings of something truly fantastic.

What do you think of Charmed being rebooted? Are you excited for the new show, or are you tired of reboots? Let us know what you think in the comments!
