Update 2/2/18: Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle will tie the knot on July 4th of this year in Batman #50, but not without the Joker messing things up first. Tom King and Clay Mann will tag-team the forthcoming issue.
Last June, Batman unexpectedly proposed to his longtime girlfriend, and even longer time frenemy, Catwoman, after taking stock of his life following their confrontation with Bane. DC held off on giving us Catwoman’s answer as an extended flashback played out in “The War of Jokes and Riddles” storyline. But now the war is over, and Catwoman has given her response.
USA Today broke the news about Catwoman’s “yes,” which should prove to be interesting as their union unfolds in the weeks and months ahead. Batman writer Tom King was also interviewed for that story, but you may want hold off on clicking over there, as it spoils the secret reason that Batman was so ashamed by his actions during the Joker and Riddler’s conflict.
Getting Batman and Catwoman together as a couple isn’t breaking new ground for DC, as they’ve had an on-again, off-again, courtship through many decades and reboots. No matter what happens, they always seem to end up back together. The real question here is whether DC will actually go through with the wedding and keep them together for an extended period. Now, that would be groundbreaking, and it also goes against the conventional wisdom of angst-filled superhero comics. However, it seems to have worked out for Superman and Lois Lane. Perhaps the Dark Knight and Catwoman are due for some happiness of their own.
It’s worth noting that the original Batman and Catwoman from Earth-2 also got married, and they ended up having a daughter named Helena Wayne, who went on to become the Huntress. It’s a little early for that possibility to unfold yet again, but there is a precedent for it. In the meantime, here’s a look back at the moment that the Golden Age versions of these characters came together.
Batman #32 will be released on Wednesday, October 4.
