CASTLEVANIA’s Koji Igarashi Builds A SUPER MARIO MAKER Level with Mean Tricks

Anticipation for Super Mario Maker is at an all-time high as the game releases in North America today, and there has been a wide variety of previews of the game, from our glowing review to IGN’s Super Mario Maker Challenge. But it’s perhaps been most interesting to see actual game developers get their hands on Nintendo’s wonderful level-creation tool. Rayman creator Michel Ancel tried it out last month, and Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka recently demonstrated a custom level they created.

The latest dev to get their hands on Super Mario Maker is Castlevania designer Koji Igarashi, so watch him talk about the game and create a level above. What we can learn from this video is that Igarashi is a bad, evil man: in his stage, he put Bowser at the very beginning of the level, pixels away from Mario’s start point. He (through a translator) spoke on his rationale, saying, “Welcome service. You walk into the stage and instantly… oh look! There’s your present!”

He went on to explain his choice to go hard in the paint from the get-go and revealed his mindset when he makes games, Super Mario Maker or otherwise: “I first put Koopa [Bowser, aka King Koopa] right at the beginning because that’s a big surprise. You’ve never seen Koopa at the beginning of a stage, only at the end of the stage, so it kind of turns Mario logic on its ear. It’s funny, and I like putting in little nerdy gamer tricks and jokes in-game.”

Igarashi clearly has no concern about players’ feelings, but maybe other developers will: this video is the first in a series from Polygon in which they’ll get other creators to design Super Mario Maker levels. Let us know in the comments who else should take a stab at it, but more importantly, have a direct impact on who actually does by letting Polygon know who they should recruit.
