CASTLEVANIA Animated Series’ First Trailer Tugs at Nintendo Heartstrings

CASTLEVANIA Animated Series’ First Trailer Tugs at Nintendo Heartstrings

If you were a video game player growing up in the 1980s, there’s a good chance you spent many hours hunting vampires as Simon Belmont in 1986’s Castlevania. I know I did, which is what made the news of Netflix‘s Castlevania animated series downright exhilarating.

Netflix really went for the nostalgia factor with the trailer’s opening sequence, which begins with a shot of the original Nintendo system and Castlevania cartridge. Our player even takes the time to blow on the cartridge before inserting it into the NES! Talk about a blast from the past. Before you get too comfortable, however, there are some slight edits to the game’s opening title cards, including references to Netflix and some of the streaming service’s more popular series’ like Stranger Things, Narcos, House of Cards, and Orange Is the New Black.

We even see a quick synopsis for the animated series, which comes from Dredd executive producer Adi Shankar and writer Warren Ellis. The screen reads, “The last surviving member of a disgraced clan fights to save Eastern Europe from Dracula, inspired by the classic NES game …” The animation in the trailer is manga-influenced, which will give viewers a Vampire Hunter D vibe. As for our main characters, we don’t see much of Simon and Count Dracula, but we do get Simon’s trademark whip, some blood, and wicked blade action.

With its release date set for July 7, we’re bound to get a longer trailer and more details within the next few weeks. You never know, this may prompt longtime gamers to dust off their old Nintendos and run back the original game for old time’s sake.

What do you think about Castlevania‘s first trailer? Are you ready to help Simon Belmont fight some vampires? Let your voice be heard in the comments section below.
