Cartoon Network Announces JUSTICE LEAGUE ACTION Animated Series

For an entire generation, the definitive versions of Batman and the Joker are voice actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. Originally portraying the characters in Bruce Timm’s classic Batman: The Animated Series back in 1992, the two continued to play the roles through several different series over the next thirteen years, like The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Now, after a decade since playing those iconic characters on television, the two are reuniting as Batman and Joker for an all-new DC Universe animated show for Cartoon Network called Justice League Action.

Justice League Action will star the “DC Trinity” of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, as well as several other characters from the pages of DC Comics. According to the official press releases, “Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman lead the DC Comics Super Heroes against their most infamous foes in adventures packed with relentless thrills, fun and action. No need to wait for the good stuff to start, each eleven-minute episode jumps in with lightning-paced action and heroics. Whether defending the Earth, facing invaders from space, or battling the bizarre forces of magic, the always-rotating team of Justice League heroes, are up to any challenge.”

You can check out the first teaser image for the series below:

Aside from Conroy and Hamill, other notable voice actors for the new show will be  James Woods as Lex Luthor, Diedrich Bader (the voice of Batman on Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as Booster Gold, and many more well-known voice actors who are yet to be announced. The creative team is full of DC Animation alums with Sam Register executive producing, and Butch Lukic (Justice League, Batman Beyond), Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series), and Jim Krieg (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) also producing.

Of course, the big question DC animation fans will have is this: Does this show take place in the official DC Universe animated continuity? Well, there doesn’t seem to be an answer yet. The addition of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker seems to suggest it is, but the animation style from the teaser image is pretty different from what we’re used to. Having said that, the style of the DC shows always changed somewhat from series to series.

Justice League Action doesn’t have a release date yet, but I imagine it’ll premiere in time for next year’s live-action Justice League film.
