Warning: There are potential spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel!
Marvel’s countdown to 2019 has began, now that the first trailer for Captain Marvel has arrived. Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers is living her best life in the ’90s for her first live-action solo flick. From what we can see here, Carol’s story appears to be quite different from her traditional comic book origin. Today’s Nerdist News is breaking down the Captain Marvel trailer for clues to Carol’s new backstory and a possible glimpse of her future.
Join host and undercover Skrull Empress, Jessica Chobot, as she takes us “Higher, Further, Faster, More.” Incidentally, that tag line from the accompanying poster comes directly from the name of the first comic arc where Carol took the Captain Marvel name for herself. The trailer showed us Carol as a member of the Kree’s Starforce, which is basically their Seal Team 6. But what we were really intrigued by were the hints that Carol doesn’t remember her life on Earth.
In the comics, Carol did suffer memory loss after an attack by Rogue. But we’re thinking Carol’s memory problems in the MCU may stem from the way she gained her powers. Or perhaps the Kree wiped Carol’s memory when they put her on Starforce. If Carol turned her back on Starforce, this may be why Nick Fury refers to her as a “renegade soldier.” It’s entirely possible that Carol’s former team may end up becoming her enemies before this movie is over.
However, the primary threat appears to be the Skrulls, unless you think Captain Marvel just loves beating up elderly ladies for no reason. The Skrulls’ infiltration of Earth looks to be one of the major stories in this film, and it could potentially expand in scope for a Secret Invasion adaptation down the line. There’s a lot to unpack in this trailer, including possible appearances of Carol’s cat, Chewie, and Monica Rambeau (Photon) as a child.
