Captain America and Hulk Square Off in EA Chicago’s Cancelled Marvel 3D Brawler

Well, what do we have here? It seems Kotaku has come across absolute gold for fans of Marvel fighting games. Back in 2007, EA Chicago was working on a 3D brawler–similar to those Japanese arena battle games–based on the Marvel universe for the Xbox 360. Unfortunately (or maybe not so much) the game was cancelled. Luckily, the fine folks at PtoP are back doing what they do best: excavating unfinished video games from the depths of oblivion so that we all may witness what could have been. Check out a video of the nixed title at the top of the page.

Okay, so definitely not as free-flowing and entertaining to watch as any of the Marvel versus Capcom games, but not too shabby nonetheless. You can certainly see what direction EA Chicago was trying to go in– making an over-the-top 3D Marvel brawler packed with the destruction and mayhem that you’d see in the movies. However, after viewing this cancelled treasure that PtoP Online managed to dig up, I think it’s very apparent how difficult it was to deliver on scaled action of that magnitude. Did you notice how the destructible environments caused an excessive drop in the game’s frame rate? And this just goes to show you that no matter how lofty your vision may be for making a game, actually building one through the slings and arrows of game development takes a high amount amount of complex work.

Would you have liked to see this game come to fruition? Are there any other game prototypes that you wished would have been completed in full (*cough* Star Wars 1313)? Tell us why you’re mad/sad/don’t care in the comments below.
