CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Cut a Fight Scene Between Two Avengers

Captain America: Civil War had some of the most memorable superhero fights that we’ve seen on film, but that doesn’t mean that we saw every encounter that was originally envisioned for the movie. According to screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Chris Evans’ Cap almost went one-on-one with another Avenger.

There are some minor spoilers ahead for Civil War! You’ve been warned!

During an interview with Fandango, Markus said “there was a good fight between Captain America and Black Widow that we lost mainly due to time.” Black Widow and Cap had previously bonded in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and they were the only original members still on the Avengers at the end of Age of Ultron. So any battle between the two characters was bound to have personal overtones.

“[Cap and Black Widow] clearly have a deep relationship even though they’re clearly on opposite sides, and you never know how many times you need to hit that over the course of the movie,” added McFeely. “I think it works without this fight, but we certainly didn’t know if it would.”

The screenwriters noted that Black Widow already had a fight with Hawkeye, one of her closest friends in the Avengers, which may have made her battle with Cap redundant. McFeely also jokingly downplayed the winner of the Cap vs. Black Widow fight by adding, “Let’s just say he got away in the moment, how about that?”
