My Hollywood by Mona Simpson
A wonderfully provocative and appealing novel, from the much-loved author of Anywhere But Here and A Regular Guy, her first in ten years. It tells the story of two women whose lives entwine and unfold behind the glittery surface of Hollywood.

Claire, a composer and a new mother, comes to LA so her husband can follow his passion for writing television comedy. Suddenly the marriage—once a genuine 50/50 arrangement—changes, with Paul working long hours and Claire left at home with a baby, William, whom she adores but has no idea how to care for.

Lola, a fifty-two-year-old mother of five who is working in America to pay for her own children’s higher education back in the Philippines, becomes their nanny. Lola stabilizes the rocky household and soon other parents try to lure her away. What she sacrifices to stay with Claire and “Williamo” remains her own closely guarded secret.

In a novel at turns satirical and heartbreaking, where mothers’ modern ideas are given practical overhauls by nannies, we meet Lola’s vast network of fellow caregivers, each with her own story to tell. We see the upstairs competition for the best nanny and the downstairs competition for the best deal, and are forced to ask whether it is possible to buy love for our children and what that transaction costs us all.

Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir by Dave Mustaine with Joe Layden
The fall and rise of a heavy metal icon…
Dave Mustaine is the first to admit that he’s bottomed out a few times in his dark and twisted speed metal version of a Dickensian life.
Impoverished, transient childhood? Check.
Abusive, alcoholic parent? Check.
Mind-fucking religious weirdness (in his case the extremes of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Satanism)? Check.
Alcoholism, drug addiction, homelessness? Check, check, check.
Soul-crushing professional and artistic setbacks? Check.
Rehab? Check (seventeen times, give or take).
Near-death experience? Check that one, too…
Mustaine has battled through it all to achieve dizzying heights. From the early, heady days of Metallica, being unceremoniously let go only to become a world-famous rock star—founder, front man, singer, songwriter, and guitarist (and de facto CEO) for Megadeth, one of the most popular bands in heavy metal—Mustaine’s is a story that will inspire, stun, and terrify.

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. But we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books—but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. we have lived among you without you knowing.
But they know.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They killed them all.
I am Number Four.
I am next.

That about wraps it up for me. Happy reading, nerdlings! Oh and  if I’ve missed something or if you have any exciting (or not so exciting, I don’t mind) questions, comments or words of wisdom then leave ’em right here! Or on Twitter! Or email me!

Oh my! I just finished reading the first one (The Walking Dead) and I love it! So far so good! I am going to buy the second book and the third book tomorrow. I am so excited that I found a new series! Your taste in books is awesome. So far I’ve loved everything I’ve picked up. Why can’t more females in Alabama be into this stuff so I have someone to freaking talk to. Thanks for the heads up on so many awesome books!

  2. The Harp says:

@ Jared: Not Shyamalan, but almost as bad; Michael Bay purchased the screenplay adaptation of “I Am Number Four” (written by Alfred Gough & and Miles Millar) for Bay to produce. Rumors name Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) as the star.

@ Jessica: Thanks for the Walking Dead love! Best. Comic. Evar.

  3. Ryanz says:

Been with it since issue one, fictional as they may be, zombies are the most likely real life modern monster. And the ongoing story of what could happen is amazing. Kirkman is a phenomenal writer, amazing pacing and twists. Lovers of his style, i recommend the series Invincible. Yes super hero based, but fairly self contained, need not know thing one about any other hero or power. Little more light hearted mainly (he names the story arcs after 80’s sit-coms), but there is great love for the characters and great drama. Available in trades as well, try it out.

PS – Keep up the good work and Jessica, amazing variation in your choices. =]

  4. The Walking Dead is the best series ever!! I can’t wait for the TV show. Anyone reading this even if you don’t read comic books you will love the Walking Dead, it’s that good!

  5. @Jared: …is that… are you… joking? Please?

@Rhacodactylus: BUWAHAHA, that’s basically what I thought and couldn’t resist adding it to the post.

@Brian: I have no idea what an Amazon affiliate link is, but that sounds like a good time. If you have any information about that, you should email me! [email protected] — also, I usually do include the links, I’m not sure what happened to them on this post. Perhaps I will fix that. Maybe.

    @Sarah: YES! Glad you agree.

  6. Sarah Moran says:

The Walking Dead!! Love that series. It’s only, maybe, I think , yes, the best comic series ever!

And kudos to you for recognizing that good literature can come in the form of comic books.

  7. Brian says:

You should have an Amazon affiliate link so you can get a small referral fee. Also, the link would be nice, so I don’t have to go there and search myself (yeah, I’m lazy).

  8. Oh dear lord, who on earth would give Dave Mustaine an open ended forum to talk about himself!?! It’s like that hackneyed old joke . . . the difference between Dave Mustaine and God is that God doesn’t think he’s Dave Mustaine.

  9. Jared says:

I think I read something about I am number 4 being adapted into film by M. Night shamalan.
