CALL OF DUTY Adds On Third Dev Studio, Switches To Three Year Development Cycle

Have you ever felt like the Call Of Duty games were being rushed out? Well, guess what? From now on, Call Of Duty games will have an extra year tacked onto their development window. Activision made it official, announcing Sledgehammer (the guys behind Modern Warfare 3) as the third COD developer during their annual earnings call Thursday.

For those worried about there being a rift in the COD release continuum, fret not; You will still receive your annual dose of Call Of Duty action. Previously, the game operated in a two year development window, with Infinity Ward and Treyarch both releasing their games back-to-back yearly. Now, with Sledgehammer added as a main developer to the round robin of COD game making, each game will get a three year window, while still allowing there to be a COD game every year.

“This will give our designers more time to envision and innovate for each title. Simultaneously, it will give our content creators more focus on DLC and micro-DLC which, as you know, have become large and high-margin opportunities and significant engagement drivers,” said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. “Finally, we’ll give our teams more time to polish, helping ensure we deliver the best possible experience to our fans each and every time.”

There’s a chance this extra year could be just what the COD franchise needed to continue to grow at a respectable rate. Do you think the extra year will help Call Of Duty bring more variety to the table with each iteration? Give us your insight on the matter in the comments below.

Let’s get one thing straight: “each game will get a three year window” does not sound like 3 actual years of development. If so, how can they be “still allowing there to be a COD game every year”?

It sounds to me like they’ve just thrown a third developer in the fray, spreading the game design even more and going “come on, chop chop! November is coming!”.

Good on you guys. I’m glad you’ve taken the rotten path; it’s the shortest one to CoD’s downfall.

Now all they need to do is drop the sub titles and just refer to them by the year of release.

    Call of Duty 2014!

I’m not against the concept of DLC, but when they refer to it as a “high-margin opportunity”, all I hear is “overpriced content.”

doesnt matter to me.. Im done playing COD, the last two werent that good. I barely play Ghosts anymore and wont even buy the expansions.. the last thing we need is another subpar rushed game designed simply to cash in. besides, micro transactions killed the gaming world

I don’t think all micro-transactions are bad. But I dig you… I think that’s why they’re going to a 3-year model. To avoid rushing things ya know?
