Britain’s Channel 4 was home to the first two series and one Christmas special of the dark sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror, but with that show now going to Netflix, the Quatro (which no one calls it) is looking to replace it with something just as ambitious, and with a lot of great pedigree behind it. A series called Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick is being produced by Channel 4 and Sony Pictures Television and will be executive produced and starring none other than Bryan Cranston, with Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) and Michael Dinner (Justified) writing.
The series will adapt Philip K. Dick‘s individual short stories into episode-length journeys into the dark and thought-provoking, Coming Soon reports. Cranston will appear in the series though it’s unclear if he’ll be in every episode or just a couple. Maybe it’ll be something like when Tom Hanks executive produced From the Earth to the Moon for HBO and hosted as well as acted in one episode.
As far as the writing goes, you can’t ask for much more than Moore and Dinner. Moore was a longtime writer for Star Trek: The Next Generation and went on to be the showrunner of Deep Space Nine and creator of Battlestar Galactica and Outlander. Dinner is a veteran TV producer and director dating all the way back to The Wonder Years in 1990. The two together will certainly do justice to the works of Philip K. Dick, whose unique look at the future spawned movies like Blade Runner, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly. With well over 100 short stories penned by Dick between 1952 and 1988. The show will surely last awhile.
Cranston said in a statement; “This is an electric dream come true. We are so thrilled to be able to explore and expand upon the evergreen themes found in the incredible work of this literary master.” Moore added, “His short stories are a treasure-trove of material for artists to draw from and I think this will be a very exciting project.”
