Boris’ masterpiece Pink is finally receiving the deluxe, super-reissue it deserves. Sargent House is releasing the album as a 3xLP box set and 2xCD, both which feature an entire album of previously unreleased tracks recorded during the Pink album sessions in 2004-2005. If you, like me, missed this record when it first came out a decade ago, nows the perfect time to pick it up.
Pink was released to huge acclaim when it first came out. The Japanese trio known as Boris blew everyone away with their fuzzy, atmospheric, rockin’ form of metal. It was punk rock, rock n’ roll, metal, and doom all at once. Pink is a beast all its own and an album that fans of all kinds of music need to experience. It really is something special.
The reissues package doesn’t skimp either. Too many times a “deluxe edition” of an album just includes some demos and a few live tracks, maybe one or two unreleased songs. Boris have provided an entire album’s worth of extra content, and none of it is throwaway garbage. It’s just more Pink: a bigger, grander experience that demands even more of your attention.
You pick up a copy of this bad boy right here or at your local record store. It’s worth the money, trust me. It’s worthy of your attention, especially if you skipped over it years ago like a damn fool (I’m the “damn fool” in this scenario).
Thanks to a lengthy interview over at Noisey, Zeal and Ardor is now on our radar big time. The album Devil Is Fine was released in April and holy freaking crap it’s unreal: a soulful blend of genres that’s borderline impossible to describe. Folk, R&B, black metal, and other elements swirl together on this album. It has been a long, long time since something so utterly unique and bizarrely twisted has come across our (metaphorical) desk. You can hear the album below, but do yourself a favor and just head over to Zeal and Ardor’s bandcamp page and buy it. You should own this thing.
Another Russian Circles track has broken free and escaped into the wilds of the internet. “Mota” is Russian Circles at their most metal: it’s riff heavy and crushing at times, hitting you with a section of blast beats that you never see coming. This album is shaping up to easily be one of our favorites this year, as it’s too epic and brilliant to not adore. Guidance is due out on August 5th, which is not as far away as it sounds. That’s what I keep telling myself, anyway.
Goblin Cock is back! The stoner metal outfit hasn’t released anything since 2009, but that’s because Rob Crow – who is Goblin Cock – was busy doing things like putting out a Pinback album and then ending Pinback (sad face) and then putting out an album from a new project. He’s a busy guy, is what we are trying to say. The good news is that he’s finally found time to produce a new Goblin Cock album, which is titled Necronomindonkeykongimicon. Yes, that’s really what it’s called. They’ve just released a track from the album called ““Something Haunted†and it’s a rocker. You can pre-order Necronomindonkeykongimicon from Joyful Noise right now.
Spirit Adrift have a new video for their song “Form and Force.” The track is from Chained to Oblivion, which is out August 8th from our friends at Prosthetic Records, and the video is really just a collection of old black and white footage, a montage of war and death. It’s fine, whatever. The song, on the other hand, is pretty damn awesome. It’s like one long, drawn out guitar riff that slowly crawls over your soul. Epic doesn’t even begin to describe it. We’re pretty excited about Spirit Adrift’s first full length album, and it’s songs like this that get us there. Listen, and watch old war footage, too, if that’s your thing.
Finally, we have a video from Gojira. It’s for the song “Low Lands” which is off of their recently released Magma. The record is pretty good, and I say this as somebody who has never really been into Gojira. I could always recognize them as an extreme talent and they certainly have the best band name of all time, but they never clicked with me. If you’re a fan of Gojira and a fan of their excellent new album, you’ll no doubt enjoy this very, very strange music video. (I mean, it’s not that strange if you remember the fact that these dudes are French.) Either way, watch it, buy the album, and enjoy some Gojira.
