BOJACK HORSEMAN Season 4 Trailer Sends Diane Looking for a Missing BoJack

If you’re in the market for a television show that’ll rev your fan-theorizing engines, there’s no better series on air than Game of Thrones. If what you’re after is a program that’ll constantly flummox and stupefy you, Twin Peaks: The Return is your best bet. For hard-boiled sci-fi: 12 Monkeys. For quotability: Rick and Morty. For provocative scares whose falterings ultimately leave you exasperated with your compulsion to keep giving this damn thing fresh chances year after year: American Horror Story. But if you were charged with choosing which contemporary small screen story packs the strongest emotional punch, prompts the heartiest of character-driven laughs, and has the most insight on the human condition, you would be wise to consider a candidate in BoJack Horseman.

The trailer for the upcoming fourth season, which hits Netflix on September 8th, suggests that no great dramatic weight or comedic oomph will be lost in the transition to this new chapter of the BoJack story. The horse himself is barely seen in the trailer, which instead relies on the vantage point of a lost and strained Diane, who is dealing with a dead-end writing career, her husband Mr. Peanutbutter’s gubernatorial candidacy, and the absence of her closest friend. Meanwhile, Princess Caroline is considering starting a family, and Todd is up to something wacky, per tradition.

When we last left BoJack, he had taken to the open road, catching sight of a tribe of bucking broncos who’d ostensibly committed themselves to running wild across the American Southwest–a continuation of the running theme (making it a running running theme) that began with BoJack’s stunted attempt at self-betterment at the end of season two. Also picking up from the tail end of season three is the inclusion of BoJack’s (possible) illegitimate daughter into the mix–per this new trailer, she’ll no doubt be playing a pretty pivotal role in the show from here on out. Though don’t expect her involvement in BoJack’s life to “fix” whatever is broken inside of either of them; the show has taught us better than that.
