At this point, there aren’t many headlines about Björk that really shock people anymore. When the experimental Icelandic musician seems to have done it all, she goes ahead and does something else. The latest product of her magical and bizarre brain is a music video for “Mouth Mantra”, from her 2015 album Vulnicura. The video was filmed in what we suppose you could consider one of the most famed locations in music history: the inside of Björk’s mouth.
Björk’s mouth though, at least in this video, doesn’t quite look like your typical piehole. The footage has been warped and the mouth ends up looking more like a morphing, wet, fleshy cave with teeth-like stalactites, like a Harry Potter-type portal to a grotesque world.
Björk collaborated with visual artist Jesse Kanda for the clip, who said the video is about the power of vulnerability. “Itâs about having the courage to express yourself and seeing yourself in that mirror,” he said. “Doing something that scares the shit out of you and sharing it, growing from it, spreading love and courage to others and making the world a warmer place to be and relate to each other.”
Björk also chimed in and wrote of the video, “i [sic] am so extremely grateful to jesse to be up for going on this journey …. it was brave of him to take it on and i feel spoiled having witnessed him grow , making hi tech mouth models and inventing cameras all to match a little therapeutic song about the throat . his dedication and devotion is overwhelming !!!”
Watch the video above, then head to the comments to let us know what you think of Björk’s latest artistic vision.
