This Incredible Tokyo Cat Café is Like an Amusement Park for Kitties

When is a cat café no longer merely a cat café? With the addition of Kichijouji Petit Mura (or “Little Village”) to the already adorable Cat Café Temari no Oshiro in Tokyo, we have the answer to that question.

Japan’s first cat café opened in 2004, and in the years since then, they’ve pretty much perfected the basic business model of “Sell some tea, provide kitties for cuddling, and a turn profit.” The soft opening of Little Village last fall took things one step further, and now that it’s open to the public, we’re privy to some of the most “Aw!”-inducing photos of a tourist destination I’ve ever seen.

With its whimsical walkthroughs and elaborate theming—the theme, of course, being “OMG Kitties!”—it’s basically a playground for café patrons of all ages. (In my experience, cats aren’t crazy about tail-pulling children, but I suppose the staff at Little Village will cross that faux cobblestone-covered bridge when they come to it.) There seems to be something almost too cute around every corner, from doors with claw-like cutout designs to cat-faced fountains.

Even better, the decor doesn’t stop once you’re inside the cafe, where cats lounge lazily (as cats are wont to do) on simulated tree stumps and inside paw prints.

According to the Temari no Oshiro site, there are at least 20 kitties roaming the grounds right now. And according to the photos floating around Twitter, those kitties are living their best lives (aside from the one I call Mister Squishface below, but maybe that’s what he looks like when he’s happy).
