Beck’s Prince Tribute: “Raspberry Beret” at the Governor’s Ball

It’s now been over a month and a half since Prince was taken from us way, way too soon. While I imagine fans will be reeling from the loss of the Purple One for the rest of their lives — I know I will — so too will all the musicians who have been influenced and effected by him. In the last month alone, we’ve seen tributes from the likes of rock and pop legends like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Madonna and Beyonce. And with all the awards shows coming up over the next year, I imagine we’ll be seeing a whole lot more where those came from.

Now the latest rock icon to do a tribute to Prince, via USA Today, is alt-rocker Beck. While playing a set at a sold-out concert at the Governor’s Ball music festival this past Friday, which is hosted in New York City’s Randall’s Island Park, singer/songwriter Beck paid proper tribute to “His Royal Badness” by covering two of his songs — a brief snippet of the 1982 classic “1999“, which he included in set closer “Where It’s At”, along with David Bowie’s “China Girl, and a full version of Prince’s 1985 classic “Raspberry Beret.”

One of Prince’s last big moments in the public eye was last year, when he presented Beck with the Album of the Year award at the 2015 Grammy’s for his album Morning Phase. The moment he walked on stage, wearing a bright orange outfit that would have made a lesser man look like a baby carrot, Prince got a standing ovation just for showing up. Because that’s was how beloved Prince was. When he presented the award to Beck, he gave him a hug, a moment that Beck told the crowd at the Governor’s Ball was one of the “strangest, most amazing moments” of his life.

Who do you think should be the next artist to pay proper to tribute to Prince? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
