Beck, Dave Grohl, and Other Surviving Nirvana Members Pay Tribute to David Bowie

The musical tributes to the late, great David Bowie continue, and from names in the music world who are arguably just as legendary. At this year’s annual pre-Grammy Awards party, thrown by Clive Davis, Dave Grohl and the other surviving members of Nirvana –Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear –teamed up with Beck to perform Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World,” the title track from his second album.

Now, if you were a teenager in the ’90s (as yours truly was) then the Nirvana version of “The Man Who Sold The World” is just as iconic as Bowie’s version, as it was famously covered by the band for their 1993 episode of MTV’s Unplugged. The recording of that special ended up as Nirvana: Unplugged in New York, which went on to become the first album released from the band after the death of Kurt Cobain, so it has a special significance to Gen-X era kids as well as classic Bowie fans.

This performance is a precursor to Lady Gaga’s tribute to David Bowie at the Grammy’s and follows up a special tribute concert last week at the Roxy in Los Angeles, which featured actors like Gary Oldman and Ewan McGregor showing off their musical side in honor of the Thin White Duke. Other performers at that special tribute to Bowie included original Spiders From Mars keyboardist Mike Garson and Seal. The band Arcade Fire also had an unusual tribute for the singer, leading a Bowie-themed parade through the streets of the French Quarter. And I’m certain none of these will be the last we’ll see this year.

You can check out snippets of the pre-Grammy performance clips below, thanks to some lucky fans who were in attendance.
