You know they’re taking another run at making a movie out of a book that everybody reads in school, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s chronicle of the dissolute rich in 1920s New York (and Long Island), The Great Gatsby. And this time, it’s Baz Luhrmann, a director not known for understatement, taking on the story, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan along for the bombast. And in 3D, no less.
So, this is the new trailer, with Lurhmann-standard visual excess and Florence and the Machine on the soundtrack. You can’t judge a whole movie by the trailer, of course, but is the Luhrmann touch — okay, it’s less a “touch” than a “groping” or “manhandling,” judging by this and by Moulin Rouge and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet — really what this story needs, considering that it’s supposed to depict extravagance? How does the casting seem to you? Are you gonna see this thing? You have until May to decide….

HT: Charlene Jimenez, who can’t wait…
The more I see of the new Great Gatsby movie, the less I want to see it. Maybe I still hold a grudge after Luhrmann stumbled through Romeo and Juliet.
Peter Parker investigating Howard Hughes! It’s funny to me that they’re playing somewhat the same types of characters at least. 🙂
If nothing else… hooray for deco revival.
