Let’s be diplomatic about this: Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had some issues. However, it also had Batman and Superman, as well as the movie-stealing Wonder Woman, and those three always make a good foundation for a film. So what could have helped turn around the movie to make it a bigger critical success? Forget pacing, forget logic, forget having anything happen for the middle 90 minutes of the film. The best solution would have been to insert Superman IV‘s Nuclear Man as the main villain.
At least that’s what this trailer, featuring Michael Keaton as Batman and Christopher Reeve as Superman, suggests. Made by YouTube user stryder HD, this imagines Doomsday being replaced by the universally loathed Superman IV foe in Snyder’s dark, brooding take on the two most iconic superheroes. He left in all the falling buildings and Batman rage, as well as plenty of sad Superman shots, but we do get to see Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, and a brief look at Lynda Carter (of course) as the Wonder Woman of this combined cinematic universe.
While Snyder’s film wasn’t exactly fun, the fan response has been, as it has inspired plenty of clever and entertaining trailers and videos. This isn’t even the first fan-made retro trailer featuring Keaton and Reeve we’ve brought you. This past spring saw another, where the two had to deal with the very dangerous pairing of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor and Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Take. Our. Money.
In fairness though, Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill were not the problem (uh…I think Affleck might be the best movie Batman ever, actually), but there’s no denying how cool a Keaton/Reeve pairing would have made in an alternate universe. One where Batman and Superman didn’t murder so many people.
