New York Comic Con has officially begun, and if you happen to be one of the attendees, you’ll be able to see the costumes of DC Comics’ “Holy Trinity” of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman from the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on display. The creator of these outfits, the film’s costume designer Michael Wilkinson, was on hand at the DC Booth at the con to talk to DC All Access about the design process for each of these costumes. He revealed some new details on each of them, as well as tidbits on the characters who will inhabit them.

In regards to Batman, now played by Ben Affleck, Wilkinson said, “It was really important for Zack [Snyder] that we created a whole new Batman. The most important thing for our Batman is that he comes across a real hulking, big guy. He’s super-pumped up. He’s going to be even bigger than Superman’s silhouette. So his strength is not through armor and gadgets and things, it is that he is a tower of muscle. Zack Snyder is a huge fan of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns and we looked a lot at that silhouette.” Wilkinson also confirmed that Ben Affleck’s Batman cowl has full-range of motion, something that not all previous cinematic Batman had. In other words, he’ll be able to turn his head, a handy thing to be able to do when fighting crime.

As for Superman, Wilkinson said there weren’t as many changes from the costume that Henry Cavill wore in Man of Steel, but eagle eyed fans will notice some differences in Kal-El’s look, like the details of his belt. Wilkinson also mentioned that this time, there is Kryptonian script hidden in Superman’s costume. “Zack [Snyder] actually loved the idea that there was some Kryptonian script embedded in the suit. He gave me this fantastic quote he wanted us to translate into Kryptonian and incorporate it into the suit. It sort of deals with the nature of power and responsibility.”

And finally, making her long awaited big screen debut is Wonder Woman, as played by Gal Gadot. On Princess Diana of Themyscira, Wilkinson added, “with Wonder Woman, Zack talked to me about creating a character who has an incredible power and strength. Her presence as a warrior is completely legitimate and unquestionable. But at the same time has a grace and elegance of the Amazonian culture. It is quite a formal culture, fighting is very disciplined, so we wanted that majesty for her look.” If you look carefully at the concept art for the character, you’ll notice that in early versions of Wonder Woman’s design, she had the red star on her tiara as she does in the comics.
