We Tested Rocksteady’s BATMAN: ARKHAM VR and Felt Very Heroic

When reading the comic book adventures of Gotham City’s sworn protector, Batman, you no doubt once or twice put yourself in the caped crusader’s boots and gauntlets. This was probably heightened while watching Batman: The Animated Series or any of the feature films. And playing the Arkham series of games was certainly the topper on that bat-shaped cake. You probably never thought you’d get any closer to feeling like Batman than that… Well luckily for us, Rocksteady Studios decided to keep upping the ante with Batman: Arkham VR coming to PlayStation VR this October…and we got to play with it at E3!

The game is touted by Rocksteady as being an old-timey detective story with a heavy dose of dark psychology. No footage was shown at E3, but our own Dan Casey got to test drive the virtual reality world of the Dark Knight and had some interesting reflections about the two parts he sampled. The first part had Dan as Bruce Wayne at Wayne Manor, entering the Batcave, and putting on the different parts of the Batsuit using the PlayStation Move controller. He did punch himself in the face here, so be careful. Rocksteady says the Batcave portion will give you about an hour of playing time, but will offer a great deal of replayability due to all the Easter eggs the player can find.

The second part of the demo put Dan in the cowl of the world’s greatest detective. Some person close to Batman–we won’t say who–gets killed and it’s up to him to solve the murder. You have to reconstruct the crime scene using your forensic skills and deductive reasoning to figure out who killed who and why. This is something that’s been completely absent from the Batman movies and part and parcel to the comics and games thus far.

We’re eager to see where the story goes from there and we’re super eager to put that VR visor back on come October. Let us know what you think of Batman: Arkham VR in the comments below!
