Australian Police Force Unveils Hoverboard Unit

The Mount Isa Hoverboard Unit in Queensland, Australia, were called to attend a curious accident on Rodeo Drive this morning: a 17-year-old man hit a silver sedan doing 88 m.p.h., and crashed into a power pole near the cinema. Damage to the power pole caused loss of power to the building, an outage in the area, and damage to the town clock, which stopped working. The Hoverboard Unit mounted their boards and sprang into action, just like any routine call. Upon inspection of the vehicle and crash site, they concluded that “investigations into the vehicle and flux capacitor are ongoing” and noted that the driver’s license “expired over 30 years ago.” If you’re thinking that something’s up with this story…

You are correct! This was an elaborate spoof, one of many paying tribute to “Back to the Future Day,” which is the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to in 1989’s Back to the Future Part II.  Mount Isa’s report is modeled from a pivotal moment in the film, where the characters accelerated a modified DeLorean to the critical 88 m.p.h. it needed to travel through time.

Apparently everyone in Mount Isa was in on the stunt, including the theater owner Jodi Saunders. She said that the driver got out of the car and asked for a Pepsi, and “he also wanted to know when we would be playing Jaws 19. Mayor Tony McGrady joined in on the fun too, adding “repairs are underway to save the clock tower.” We love how the Police brought out their sense of humor, too. That photo is a real gem.

What’s your reaction to this spoof? Did they go too far? Not far enough? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.
