If you have seen any of CW’s Arrow, then you know that Stephen Amell is quite comfortable playing the tough vigilante character. It seems one vigilante role just is not enough for Mr. Amell, as it has been reported today by Variety that he has been cast in the second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie as their street-wise vigilante friend Casey Jones.
The first film in the rebooted series, produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes Studio, did well in the box office by grossing just under $500 million. Despite this success, fans of the Turtles franchise were sad to see that Jones did not make an appearance in the film. Clad in a signature hockey mask and armed with sports equipment in his battle against crime, Jones has grown in popularity enough over the years to rival the turtles themselves.
Originally featured in a spin-off comic for the turtle Raphael, Jones has been portrayed on-screen previously by Elias Koteas in two of the three previous Ninja Turtles films, with a CGI feature film getting Freddie Prinze Jr. to provide the voice for the hockey gear clad badass. It is not yet revealed if Amell’s version will be more in line with the one Koteas played, or more manic and violent like his comic book counterpart. No matter what path Amell takes with playing the character, it is safe to say that Casey Jones will be a bit of a change compared to Oliver Queen. I personally hope they stick with the Casey Jones seen in the ’80s cartoon, who refuses to take off his mask and weapons even when undercover in a corporate office.
As of now it is confirmed that Amell will be joining Megan Fox and William Fichtner as they reprise their roles from the previous film, and the film will be penned by returning writers Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum. Platinum Dunes currently has Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 slated for release on June 3, 2016.
