ARROW Feels the Venom of the New 52’s Komodo

In yet another example of how DC is preparing to kick all kinds of ass on TV this season, Arrow has announced it will feature a fan-favorite baddie from the comic book company’s New 52. Simon Lacroix, the archer known as Komodo, will appear in the season’s second episode. Played by TRON: Legacy‘s Matt Ward (pictured above), Komodo is a mercenary who “wreaks havoc in Central City.” Entertainment Weekly reports that, according to showrunner Marc Guggenheim, “He’s the villain-of-the-week for the second week of the show, but you’ll see that Team Arrow’s pursuit of him is part and parcel of a season-long storyline… You’re going to know what happens to Komodo at the end of the episode, but it will be a little bit tied in better with the season-long mythology than villain-of-the-week episodes have done in the past.”

Although Arrow‘s first season certainly had its share of standalone villain-of-the-week stories, I thought season 2 integrated its rogues quite nicely into the season-long story arc. Even if they weren’t employed by the season’s Big Bad, Deathstoke, they served to enrich the storylines of Arrow‘s supporting characters (like Diggle with his ties to the Suicide Squad or Laurel’s relationship with Brother Blood). Still, it’s nice to know that Guggenheim and executive producer Greg Berlanti aren’t resting on their laurels (yes, I went there), and instead taking extra steps to refine what is already TV’s most efficient delivery mechanism for no-holds-barred superhero action. And with Batman uber-enemy Ra’s al Ghul set to debut as this season’s principal antagonist, Arrow is giving us as much of that action as our nerdy little hearts desire.
