Are We About to See Nintendo Movies?

Get ready for this tidbit: turns out Nintendo‘s officially going to start making some movies! But will they be as good as the 1993 cinematic masterpiece more commonly known as Super Mario Brothers the movie? Today’s Nerdist News follows whether or not House Mario will give the film industry another shot and what that may or may not look like. Since 1993 we’ve suffered with animated shows like Donkey Kong Country, The Super Mario Brothers Super Show, and the extremely short-lived Legend of Zelda: The Animated Series—but could we be on the brink of change?

In an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed that the studio is planning to make their own films, Marvel-style within the next two or three years. And best of all—no live action. As cool as a Game-of-Thones-for-Kids take on Zelda would be, The Super Mario Brothers movie is a good argument for why Nintendo’s properties might just end up feeling dorky in real-life. Instead, we’ll get big-screen Nintendo cartoons, and best of all, they’ve confirmed that these movies can be either traditionally or computer-animated, so count on more stuff that looks like that awesome Starfox anime we got last month. Maybe Nintendo will wind up filling the hole that Hayao Miyazaki‘s retirement left in our hearts.

Despite their spotty history on film, we’ve got a good feeling about this. Nintendo games have been chock-full of stellar writing and personality lately. Also, with Nintendo doing as much in-house as possible—in addition to focusing on animated films instead of wasting time trying to figure out how to make a not-horrific live-action Animal Crossing—they’re stacking the odds in their favor. The only question that remains: will the upcoming Mario, Zelda, Starfox, Metroid, and Donkey Kong films eventually lead to an Avengers-style Super Smash Brothers movie?

We can only dream. But what do you guys think? Are you pumped for some Nintendo-produced animated films? Which character do you want to see first? Will you mourn the now-dead live-action Zelda series? Let’s discuss!
