ARCHER’s Shot-for-Shot MAGNUM, P.I. Promo Was A Sign Of Things to Come

It’s almost time to get back on to the highway to the…Danger Zone, except this time international spy Sterling Archer will be channeling his inner Tom Selleck and his Hawaiian-shirt-wearing private eye character from Magnum, P.I..

Yesterday we got a promo for the upcoming seventh season of the animated spy comedy, a shot-for-shot remake of Selleck’s 1980s detective show, and today we found out why.

The show’s executive producer told Uproxx that the story of season 7 will revolve around a money-needy Archer working for a detective agency started by Cyril in Los Angeles, since he and the rest of the gang were banned from the CIA. Considering how bad things went for them when they tried to be drug dealers, this seems like a safer option, and one that will allow the show to find fresh, new disaster for the characters to face.

We also learned some of the guest stars that will join the show this season, and it’s a doozy of a list: J.K. Simmons , Keegan Michael Key, Patton Oswalt, Jon Daly, and Jon Glaser. Yup. Yuuuuuup.

If the season is half as good as the promo is, we’re in for another good one. I mean, if you didn’t know that was just a remake of Magnum, P.I.‘s opening, you could reasonably assume that these are all just clips from the upcoming season of Archer. I mean, doesn’t this look like exactly what you’d expect from Pam in literally any episode?

Pam-Archer
Oh, and to answer her question at the end, uh, yeah, they still should be doing phrasing. Also, Archer owning a complete set of toys so he can create his own episodes of Magnum, P.I. is completely and totally believable.

(By the way, I will never not laugh at the two tattoos Archer has on his back.)

If you are thinking, “Man, I really need to see these two videos side-by-side,” well the wonderful internet has already taken care of that for you:

The long and the short of it is that the seventh season of Archer starts on Thursday, March 31st on FX, and the whole gang will be back together (yeah more Cheryl!) at the new detective agency.
