Andy Park’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Concept Art Depicts Evolution of ULTRON

Marvel Studios has built up a lot of good will with comic fans thanks to the way that it has constructed its Cinematic Universe while remaining true to the spirit of the original Marvel comics. However, the comic book aesthetic doesn’t always translate well to live action, and certain changes have to be made.

Earlier this summer, Avengers: Age of Ultron featured the live-action debut of Ultron, one of the Avengers’ greatest villains. And while the final design of Ultron didn’t strictly adhere to the comics, in-house Marvel Studios artist Andy Park has posted some concept art of Ultron that reveals just how much influence the comic book incarnation of the villain had on Age of Ultron.

“These are some initial passes done for the big baddie, Ultron,” wrote Park. “What a crazy fun project to work on. I don’t get to do the more robotic designs that often here given our resident robot experts in Ryan Meinerding, Phil Saunders, along with Josh Nizzi and Josh Herman. But when I do get a chance I just savor the moment. Too much fun!”

One of the bigger changes to Ultron in the movie was the addition of a more human-like face, with eyes and a mouth that moved when James Spader’s voice was heard. Presumably that was meant to humanize Ultron with moviegoers and to allow Ultron to show more emotion.

Before he went into concept art for films, Park was a comic book artist on Tomb Raider, Uncanny X-Men, Weapon X, New X-Men, and Excalibur. Park also worked as a concept artist on Sony’s God of War video game series.
