Code Green: A Behind-The-Scenes Look At The Hulk In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

WARNING: VIDEO AND ARTICLE CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Avengers: Age Of Ultron has been out for a week now, and it has hit just as hard as anyone expected. Seeing the team back on screen again feels almost like a homecoming for fans, and a return to familiar territory. This was not true, however, for the designers and animators at Industrial Light And Magic in San Francisco during production on the film. WIRED spoke to members of the company, which had been in charge of the digital effects in the previous Avengers film. It seems they were not content with just reusing the same technology they had to create Mark Ruffalo’s version of The Hulk in The Avengers. Looking to improve on their previous work, ILM set out to completely rebuild The Hulk for the second film. Check out the video above to find out how they did it.

The technology they present, or at least talk about, in this video is insanely awesome. I can only imagine how many ridiculous faces Mark Ruffalo made as The Hulk while using the live-capture feed where he could control The Hulk in real-time. What I find most interesting is the little tid-bit they let slip that Whedon and Marvel had initially planned to have The Hulk turn grey during his battle with Tony Stark in the Hulkbuster armor. Ironic, seeing as Banner’s Grey Hulk persona in the comics is perfectly rational and able to speak in complete sentences.
