It might seems a little overboard for us to be excited about a 20 second teaser for an upcoming preview of an upcoming show, but holy crap we are excited about his 20 second teaser for AMC’s Preacher. Something got loose indeed.
Now, compared to what we have seen thus far, this brief glimpse seems much more in step with the comic series. In fact, even without the words “Based on the Cult Comic Series” appearing across the screen, you can tell this is an adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series Preacher. You probably couldn’t say that about the previous trailers, which seemed more interested in focusing on on the badassery of Jessie Custer.
But don’t just listen to us talk about it. Watch it here:
So. What do we get here? What tidbits can we gleam from 20 seconds? Well, the most important thing is obviously Arseface, one of the series most tragic and comedic characters. It does let us know that Preacher the TV series has a sense of humor, albeit a dark and twisted one. Fans of the comic know that as epic, sinister, and violent as Preacher is, humor was a huge part of the story right from the first issue. So yes, more Arseface, please. More of that insanity.
When reading Preacher back in the late ’90s, the idea that it could one day be a television series was laughable, a total impossibility. Surely they can’t put all the stuff in this comic on TV? What channel would it air on? It’d have to be HBO or something, right? Well, the world has changed. Cable has become a much more, let’s say uncensored, place and the idea that the images and storylines of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s brutal and ugly is not so far fetched. Hell, from the looks of this trailer, it look like AMC is embracing Preacher in it’s very fullest, blasphemous form.
Preacher is set to debut Sunday, May 22nd at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on AMC. We simply can not wait, guys.
And if you can’t, either, watch Dan Casey’s interview with the cast from SXSW:
