Alton Brown’s ‘Mega Bake’ Oven Can Be Seen From Space

Alton Brown, who is essentially the Bill Nye of food, recently showed off his “Mega Bake Oven” for Popular Science, and this baking behemoth is meant for one thing and one thing only: making pizzas.

The Mega Bake oven, which is like an Easy-Bake oven that underwent a Steve Rogers-esque transformation, contains 54 PAR 64 “rock n’ roll” lights that each produce a whopping 1,000 watts of power. This mean pizza-baking machine reaches 640 degrees Fahrenheit, and pumps out 54,000 watts and 1,026,000 lumens of light in total. This is, as Brown notes, enough light to see the Mega Bake oven from space. (It also makes the Mega Bake about 540 times more powerful than the miniature Easy-Bake oven he showcases at the beginning of the video.)

Also, in order to move the pizzas back and forth underneath the lamps, the contraption is controlled by a “high-tech drive mechanism,” a.k.a. a ship’s wheel. Because boat folk like pizza too!

Brown—best known as the host of the former cooking show Good Eats on the Food Network—is showing off his Mega Bake oven because he’ll be taking it on his Eat Your Science tour, which will be traveling throughout the U.S. over the next few months. The tour is an all-ages affair, that will blend together “a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment.”

Aside from being used as one of the headlining cooking contraptions of the Eat Your Science tour, Brown says that he built the Mega Bake to honor “the memory of cooking with light, [which] never faded.” Unlike the roofs of people’s mouths once they bite into a pizza that was blasted by over 54,000 watts of energy.
