What the Alpha 5, Rita Repulsa Reveals Tell Us About the POWER RANGERS Movie

With 2016 fading away into the rear view mirror, it’s time to look ahead at the year of the Power Rangers! The big screen reboot of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is but a few scant months away, and we’ve finally gotten our first glimpse at Alpha 5 and Rita Repulsa …and they’re both looking quite alien this time. Especially Alpha 5, whose redesign is a pretty big departure from the klutzy robot who served as comic relief on the TV series. But his visual design may be offering some unexpected hints about the movie—What does it all mean? Find out in today’s Nerdist News!

Returning to Nerdist News after what felt like an eternity away, host and honorary teenager with attitude, Jessica Chobot, takes a deep dive into the latest Power Rangers developments. Earlier on Monday, IGN dropped the first peak at Alpha 5’s new look, and it’s quite strange! While the shape of his head is pretty similar to the earlier design from the show, he’s got a weirdly shaped body and buggy eyes that make him really look like something that came from another world. Makes sense, though: this time, Alpha 5 will also have the voice of SNL favorite, Bill Hader, fresh off his adorable take on BB-8 in last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Of course, we can’t let this week’s Power Rangers update go by and not mention the hilarious social media takeover by the Rangers’ nemesis, Rita Repulsa. And now that we’ve got a much better look at her costume, we can’t help but wonder if the movie is already seeding the Green Ranger’s appearance in the saga.

What do you think about Alpha 5’s new look? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
