All the Words from STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE in Alphabetical Order

Just when you think you’ve seen every fan edit possible of Star Wars, someone takes an alphabetical approach. YouTube user suckerpinch broke down all of the English dialogue (known as Basic in-universe) in A New Hope in order from a to z. The programmer labeled the words from the two hours of film manually using software he wrote specifically for this project. Yes, he does have the patience of a Jedi Master. Proud Yoda would be.

The edit not only puts the words into alphabetical order, it cuts together the scenes featuring the words. The result is seeing moments from Episode IV in a whole new, bizarre light. It’s kind of like someone shook up different scenes and dumped them onto a table. They fly by in just over 43 minutes because the other 81 minutes of the film don’t feature words spoken in English. Who knew?

As you watch the edit, you’ll see there’s a count for each word. Lightsaber only appears once in the entire movie. That makes me wonder how many times it was uttered in the entire saga – maybe less than ten? Other fun facts suckerpinch discovered while alphabetizing:

There are 1695 different words, and 11,684 total words.
The most common word is “the”, of course, said 368 times.
The word with most screen time is “you”, at 52.56 seconds.

I skipped ahead to Force, and it was used 22 times. Then I couldn’t stop watching because it’s weirdly mesmerizing. I jumped to the end to watch all 312 yous and stuck around for the single word that begins with “z.” I hope suckerpinch tackles the rest of the saga.
