Alfre Woodard May Menace LUKE CAGE

Next year, Mike Colter will headline the Luke Cage series on Netflix as the streaming service’s third Marvel show following Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Now, the first major adversary for the series may have been revealed.

Alfre Woodard is said to be in final negotiations to join Luke Cage as Minetta, “a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life.” However, the initial report adds the rumor that Woodard’s character is a version of Black Mariah, a drug dealer who was a nemesis to both Cage and Iron Fist in the Marvel Universe.

If that rumor is true, Woodard would be the first villain in the Luke Cage series, and she would be likely to appear throughout the season just as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk did in Daredevil.

On television, Woodard is best known for her roles in St. Elsewhere, Desperate Housewives, State of Affairs, and the pilot episode of L.A. Law. More recently, Woodard has appeared in Copper, True Blood, The Last Ship, and the Black Panther animated series in which she voiced the Queen Mother. Of course, genre fans may also recall Woodard from Star Trek: First Contact.

Colter will make his debut as Luke Cage later this year in the Jessica Jones series opposite Krysten Ritter as the title character. Cheo Hodari Coker is the executive producer and showrunner of Luke Cage. If Woodard’s casting is any indication, we may see several new Luke Cage announcements in the coming weeks.
