For January, the Alamo Drafthouse has unveiled a mighty compendium of must-see movies that every cineaste should see, love, and see again. Called the Alamo 100, the list is exactly what it says on the tin. It contains many movies you might expect, like Alien, The Godfather, and Vertigo, but also ones not typically on best-of lists (though they should be), like the Japanese horror movie Hausu, Danger: Diabolik!, and even Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space (the movie Ed Wood is on the list as well). It’s the kind of eclectic grouping that has become synonymous with the Alamo Drafthouse.

There’s a fair amount of great silent films on the list, from acclaimed directors like Charlie Chaplin, Fritz Lang, Robert Weine, and Buster Keaton, but newer comedies like Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Mean Girls are also present. Horror films, westerns, sci-fi movies, and a generous mixture of the schlocky and sublime come together for 100 movies you really can’t pin down, but will make you want to update your Netflix queue immediately.

Or, if you happen to live near one of the Alamo Drafthouse locations, you can simply go and see the movies on the big screen. Each month this year, you’ll get a chance to see a handful of choices. For January, the movies in question are Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, Richard Donner’s The Goonies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull, Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, and John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles. That’s a pretty phenomenal way to start the year, wouldn’t you say? Tickets can be purchased on the Alamo Drafthouse website, as is common for most businesses who want to have customers.
